Hi friends! We’re excited to kick off a new blog series called The Source by Claire Zinnecker Design. Each post will highlight the little elements that make a big impact in interiors - our favorite features, trusted sources, and even a few trade secrets we’ve picked up along the way.
For our first feature, we’re diving into cabinetry hardware. One detail you’ll often see in a CZD home is the art of mixing styles - an approach that adds character, customization and a distinctly signature touch. For us, mixing pulls, knobs, and latches brings a sense of individuality to a space. We love creating kitchens with a thoughtful blend of hardware styles, each selected to enhance both the function and the everyday beauty of the room. After all, the way you open a top drawer is completely different from how you reach for something under the sink. Your hardware choices should reflect those unique interactions - designed not just for looks, but for the way you actually live in the space.
When it comes to hardware finishes, we often find ourselves reaching for unlacquered or antique brass and polished nickel. Both materials develop a natural patina over time, evolving with the home and telling a story all on their own. Beyond their beauty, these finishes carry a timeless, old-world elegance - instantly adding warmth, depth, and a sense of history to any space.
Now that we’ve shared a bit about our approach, we’re excited to highlight a few of our go-to hardware styles, beloved brands and three tips to keep in mind when mixing your hardware styles.
3 tips to consider:
Mixing Metals
Don’t be afraid to mix metals! We love the look. Try polished nickel on the perimeter cabinetry paired with brass on the island for a layered and collected feel. The contrast adds depth and interest without feeling forced.
When Finishes Don’t Match Exactly
Finishes do not always have to be a perfect match, and that is part of the charm. If you are combining different styles, we recommend ordering samples first to see them side by side. If the tones complement each other, trust your eye and go with it.
Balancing Aesthetics and Function
Beautiful details should also be practical in a hardworking space like the kitchen. For example, latches are lovely, but best reserved for cabinets that are not opened every day. Knobs are a timeless favorite, while pulls are ideal for functional pieces such as a trash pull-out where ease of use really matters.
We hope this peek into our favorite hardware details inspires you to think about the little touches that make a big impact in your own home.
